I worked with Deborah DiMare virtually to design our master bedroom (project wrap-up with photos coming soon!). I wanted my bedroom to be both ethical (i.e. vegan furniture) and CONSCIOUS of toxins. I never strive for perfection in this department- just higher awareness matched with conscious well thought out decisions.

Now that I’m pregnant with Baby S (coming August 2021!), I’m feeling very blessed to have Deborah in my life. She just launched Online Nursery + Kids Room Design Course. This course is for the consumer, not the designer, and is designed so that you (as a parent) can feel confident in creating a room that is safe, healthy, and ethical.

When I sat down to begin the process of making the nursery, I found myself overwhelmed within a few clicks! SO many choices. SO many choices. and SO much I really didn’t know how to decipher.

I want to feel confident and empowered about all my choices in this room.

What do I mean “feel good” about my choices? Like, color scheme and woodland animal theme?

It’s a fair question! I want my baby to live in a healthy room — and with all the information we have around chemicals in our paint, and décor — it’s hard to turn a blind eye here. Again, it’s not to say I’m doing things perfectly, but I wanted to have some footing and understanding of what everything meant.

A conscious room is not just about the toxins and chemicals, its about the sensory experience. You all know I’m SUPER sensory specific. The wrong smell makes me want to throw a brick, and the wrong fabric makes me angrier than a WWF fighter.

I also know how I feel when a space, feels, looks, and smells soft and inviting. and how that contributes to rest and relaxation and a healthy nervous system!

Despite my desire to want to do good, implementing felt impossible.

Without knowledge of how to navigate this space (which is practically another language), I was a LOST. Sure I could go back to being asleep and just choose things back on aesthetic, or price, but that felt like the “easy way out” — and the way out I would regret (aka, end up redoing and spending more time redoing/ordering things AGAIN).

So I took Deborah’s online program all about creating a health conscious nursery.

I expected to learn a ton about creating a nursery but ended up getting so much more. She covers creating a kid’s room in general — which means I will be revisiting these modules in a few years when Baby S is no longer Baby S.

This course provides all the tips and tools to be a detective when shopping.

About the course:

It includes (but is not limited to) the following:

– How to measure, decorate, and learn a simple design process

– How to draw and create a layout to determine the best placement of furniture — including how to draw your own floor plan

– A tutorial on Pinterest (which I needed!!)

– Common chemicals found in home and décor – and how to avoid them

– The most toxic furniture to look out for (things like formaldehyde in our sheets)

– Choosing paints (that don’t emit chemicals we breathe in)

– Choosing a mattress — did you know that plant-based ones can be just as harmful??

– Choosing FABRICS – I know the certifications to look for that give me the assurance to feel that my baby won’t be lying on linens with any chemicals of concern since fabrics can contain residual chemicals. I also know what labels to avoid that sound promising, such as wrinkle-free or fade resistant – even fire retardant – as these finishes mean chemicals have been added.

Our environment shapes us, so creating a room that is soft on sensory needs is key for me, especially when sleep is essential for babies.

I walked away feeling ABLE to make choices…. and I can’t wait to show you the nursery once it’s done!!

I still have a few more choices to make, but so far I’ve selected carpet, a crib, a glider, and a dresser. I hope it comes out as I envision and I can’t wait to share it with you!
